Peculiarities of Message Transmittance in Transmittance Communication

The article focuses on the problem of message transmittance in indirect communication. Indirect communication is marked by functioning of the third anthropoconstituent in the interaction, due what message transmittance is made in successive stages – from the sender to transmitter and from the latter – to the recipient. The process of message transmittance through transmittance communication channel presupposes definite social and psychological relations among the members of the interaction. The success of such a communication depends on the functioning of the intermediate link – transmitter and his relations with the principal members of the indirect interaction. Successful transmittance communication is determined by correlation degree between the initial and final message. Correlation degree can be complete; partial or zero depending on the social and psychological relations among the communicators. The process of message transmittance may be a failure because of some hindrances owing to the code discrepancy, irrelevance between the signal and the message, code imperfection and its incorrect usage.
Key words:message transmission, anthropoconstituent of communication, indirect communication, indirect succession, transmitter, channel of communication, communication interference.

Among the modern cognitologic studies the question of the worldview and linguistic personality is quite popular. An accentuated linguistic personality is of a special interest, which has determined the vector of our studies. In the theoretical part of the article the definition is given to such fundamental terms as worldview, concept and sphere of concepts. Their role in the structure of the linguistic personality if clarified. The practical part of the article deals with the system of concepts of the main heroine of the television series “Nashville”. As a result of our analysis of the communication practice of the chosen heroine, the following conclusion was drawn: a number of cognitive constructs (FAMILY, TRUST, MARRIAGE, LOYALTY, MUSIC та SUCCESS) is widely conceptualized. This, in its turn, shows the specificity of the conceptual worldview of the heroine.

Key words:worldview, concept, sphere of concepts, conceptual worldview, linguistic picture of the world, accentuated linguistic personality.

Functional Peculiarities of the English Meaning «Particular» Based on the Adjective Super

The article touches upon semes functional characteristics of an English adjective super. The word is a typical representative of the lexico-semantic group denoting generalized value particular. Etymological, lexicological, and syntagmatic data were taken into consideration to study principles of semes actualization for the adjective. According to a specific investigational algorithm, the semes were primarily designated when analyzing the definitions given in the articles of modern English dictionaries. Having systemized the meanings, the author investigates the ways of semes realization in typical text collocations of modern English literature. It was revealed that, being a periphery member of the lexico-semantic group, super, as a rule, depicts generalized evaluation in situations of admiration. One of the most common peculiarities of the word is its function of intensification for any characteristic/object in a form of adjective or adverb. It is covalent actually with all types of nouns in the situations where evaluation is intended or possible. The 4 lexemes of the adjective super can be classified as cognate synonyms of a special kind with close meanings. They possess a particular ability to express more powerful qualities or additional values while estimating different types of objects, people, situations, phenomena, etc., including negative characteristics usually actualized by a separate seme haughty. The results of the research prove the prevailing tendency to explicate the seme powerful or great in the majority of usage cases.

Key words:semes, etymological data, inner-structural meaning, semes actualization, graduation of the meaning, cognate synonyms.

Acoustic and Phonetic Aspects of Modeling Human-Computer Communication

The article summarizes the main approaches to modeling human-computer speech communication by integrating speech synthesis and recognition technologies into the graphical user interfaces. Modern automatic dialogue systems are in the focus of attention. They combine automatic speech synthesis and recognition with conceptual models of knowledge required for modeling relevant human-computer dialogue. The reasons causing additional complications in speech synthesis and recognition are carefully analyzed. The article offers a principal scheme for the acoustic-phonetic analysis of human speech. The components of a typical automatic dialogue system are singled out and examined using the instruments of modern experimental phonetics. The paper suggests a guide of how to implement the mechanisms of modern signal phonetics in order to improve the performance of automatic dialogue systems.

The Realization of the Speech Act of “Comforting” in the English Discourse: Communicative and Pragmatic Aspects

This article is dedicated to the investigation of verbal and nonverbal means of performing the speech act of “comforting” in the English language. The speech act of “comforting” is represented by the number of the speech moves aimed at the change of the addressee’s emotional behaviour in order to help him to overcome some negative emotions and feelings. The study shows that for succeeding the communicative intention the speaker makes use of various lexical and semantic means including such interjections as “Come. Come”, “there, there” and vocatives my dear, my love, darling. For comforting the addressee the sender utilizes the imperatives in both affirmative and negative forms, e.g. “Cheer up!”, “Don’t worry (about it)”, “Don’t let it get you down”. Such imperatives are referred to “polite imperatives”. The research states that constatives with the illocutionary effect of commissives may be the effective means of making an influence on the addressee in order to comfort him. The sender may also use the utterances with the illocutionary effect of menace. Performing the speech act of “comforting” the sender focuses the addresse’s attention not only on the beneficial side of the action which is suggested to him but also on the possible negative consequences if it is not accepted. The main types of communicative activity in this situation are persuading, focusing the addressee’s attention on personal experiences of those who were in the similar situation and the use of proverbs which embody people’s philosophy and psychology.

Key words:speech act of “comforting”, sender, addressee, directives, constatives, illocutionary effect.

Epistemic-Deontic Cluster Will, Won’t: Expression of Doubt in the English Language Discourse

The article presents a research on marking doubt in the English language discourse by epistemic-deontic cluster will, won’t. The research starts with description of the grounds of the scientific problem, explanation of the main epistemic categories and terminology. The author gives its own interdisciplinary definition from the philosophical and psychological perspective on the basis of cognitive linguistics and epistemology. For illustrating the usage of will, won’t and their grammatical and contracted forms shall, shan’t, ’ll we have chosen examples where all their modal meanings are covered: ranging from deontic interpretation of desire or intention, threat or promise, and to the epistemic interpretation of anticipation and prediction, which includes the element of doubt. The cases when deontic and epistemic spheres of meaning start contaminating each other are also given special attention.

Key words:doubt, epistemic state, epistemic modality, deontic modality, epistemic-deontic buffer zone.

The Tactics of Gender Confrontation in Donald Trump`s Communicative Strategy (on the 2016 Election Campaign Materials)

The main purpose of the research is to define the key communicative strategy of the 2016 presidential election campaign winner Donald Trump and analyze its gender confrontation tactics. Based on the collected empirical material it was proved that the politician often consciously breaks the norms of political correctness. The fact that his main opponent is a woman, Hillary Clinton, might be one of the core reasons for the gender confrontation present in his political speeches. The article shows the examples of the political correctness norms violations based on the gender principle and analyzes the politician`s vision of a woman and her role in the society. The research proves that in his speeches Donald Trump reveals three main female stereotypical roles – a beauty, a wife / mother and a material object. All these contradicts both, the norms of political correctness and gender-neutral principles of political communication in modern democratic countries. The tactics of gender confrontation in Donald Trump`s speeches is realized via means of subjective modality and evaluation, stylistic devices such as irony and rhetorical questions. According to the research, the politician prefers informal communicative style and constant shortening of the social distance with the audience.

Discursive Categories of the English Diplomatic Discourse

The author attempts to describe the English diplomatic discourse through the prism of its discursive categories. Polemical views concerning the interpretation of the concept of a discursive category are presented. The classifications of the categories of discourse are analysed. The concept of a discursive category is specified. The taxonomy of discursive categories is suggested and the basic discursive categories of the diplomatic discourse are singled out. The description of such categories as modality, emotiveness, point of view, event, which are the backbone of the categorial grid of the English diplomatic discourse, is suggested. In this way an attempt to define the categorial grid of the diplomatic discourse as an institutional type of discourse is carried out. It is found out that of particular importance to diplomatic communication is the category of modality and the category of event. The author gives a detailed review of the interpretations of modality by different scholars. The main language means that often serve to express the categories constituting the core of the categorial taxonomy of the diplomatic discourse are presented.

Linguocultural Peculiarities of German Proverbs which Contain Denominations of Craft-Oriented Professions

This article focuses on the study of the linguocultural peculiarities of German proverbs which contain denominations of craft-oriented professions. It is within proverbs that the centuries-old practical experience of a nation, and its accumulated life-related wisdom and moral values are incorporated and the attention is focused mainly on the individual himself, who is a language-based personality of an ultimately multi-faceted nature. This article provides an analysis of the lexico-semantic, word-formative and gender-linked specifics of the names of handicraft-oriented professions, many of which date back to the early Middle Ages; it demonstrates the frequency with which these names occur and illuminates the culture-related historical content of the proverbs which contain these denominations. This article describes some of the specific features of the production activities of German craftsmen of the Middle Ages (potters, smiths, millers, tailors, carpenters and many others), dealing with the production tools and the working conditions of that time, as well as materials which the craftsmen used, their items of clothing, their units of measurement, and the manner in which the production process was organized. Particular attention is devoted to the professional traits of the craftsmen and to their observance of the moral and ethical norms of the society of their era, as well as to the members of professions which were “outlawed” in medieval Germany.

Frame Structures Denoting Human Temper in the Literary Discourse

The article deals with the problem of the frame representation of the peculiarities of the character features of the personages in the German literary discourse. The frames are regarded as cognitive structures which represent knowledge about a certain object, process or phenomenon. In the given research the differentiation between the terms “frame” and “frame structure” is made, according to which the frames are the mental formations that are composed of the terminals; the frame structures consist of the terminal elements and are the language correlates of the corresponding frames in a discourse. On the basis of the categorical knowledge stated in lexicographic sources the main terminals of a frame can be determined. The terminal elements, which represent the relevant terminals of the frame “Human Temper” and depict the behavior and the character of the personages in a literary discourse, have been analyzed. As a result of the study it was revealed that the frame structures which describe human temper are the significant discourse segments that provide the integrity of the depicting frame structures and are of great importance in the portrayal of the inner world of the characters in an artistic literary discourse.

Key words:frame, frame structure, terminal, terminal element, human temper, discourse.

Rendering Lexical and Stylistic Features of J. D. Salinger’s “Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut” in the Ukrainian Translations

The paper presents the results of comparative analysis of two Ukrainian translations of J. D. Salinger’s story entitled “Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut”. The data were analyzed in order to study the opposition “original-oriented vs. reader-oriented” translation. The study was undertaken on several levels. Peculiarities of graphons rendering were traced at the phono-graphic level. The lexical level comprises culture-specific vocabulary, invectives and slang. The lexico-semantic level includes metaphors, similes, epithets and antonomasia.
The authors state that translation of culture-specific vocabulary depends on the extent to which foreign culture realities are integrated into the readers’ culture. Where the translator fails to convey the author’s signature idiolect, e.g. graphons, the literary piece register becomes more neutral and meaningful details are lost. Moreover, the translated work of fiction can be neutralized and euphemized due to censorship and ideology. The authors conclude that successful translation can be defined in terms of its preserved authentic features and accessibility for the readers.

Key words:poetic translation, graphon, culture specific vocabulary, slang, invectives, euphemisation.

In this article the double-sided research of human lingual qualities is presented. In the theoretical part of work the analysis of human lingual qualities development in ontogenesis and history genesis is carried out. Besides, the researchers have made a theoretical view of the most actual speech creation models, including their own model, which is partially based on the ideas of O. O. Leontiev. The practical part of the research describes the empirical analytical exploration of students in the gathered group of respondents according to the principal of the development of their verbal lingual qualities. The further search of the most favorable psychological features for verbal qualities progress is conducted. The students of the mathematical, biological, psychological and economical faculties were enabled as the respondents for this scientific work. At the same time the methodic of verbal activity evaluation by A. Krylov, S. Manichev and the methodic of psychological personality’s diagnostics by Katella were used as the researching instruments in the practical side of this work. The achieved in this research results denote, that the adequate level of self-esteem, middle self-control level, high grate of credulity and light introversion are serving as best psychological ground for the lingual verbal qualities development.

Key words:lingual ability, lingual qualities, lingual world’s representation, psychological human features, model of speaking creation, development of personality.

The Evolution of the Genre of the French Historical Novel in the First Half of the Nineteenth Century

The problem of the historical novel evolution process is analysed in the current investigation. This issue attracts attention of some Soviet and European researches but still can be defined as investigated inappropriately. Different approaches towards historical novel analyzing are taken into account in the article. This fact allows obtaining complete conception of attitude to this literary genre in the European literature in general and in the French literature in particular. Foremost there were identified main obstacles that interfere appropriately define the role and place of the historical novel in the world literature. Besides, the research finds out key points of the genre transformation through centuries. The period of XIX century was chosen because of possibility to identify strictly one phase of historical novel establishing and functioning from another. Historical novel in the French literature can be regarded as a genre that stimulates history and obtains place between “ordered literature” and “pure art”. It is demanded to understand connection between a literary work and recipient to fully understand peculiarities of the genre functioning, both in synchronic and diachronic aspects.

The Systemic Functional Approach to the Investigation of English Multimodal Discourse

This paper deals with the principal approaches which can be employed when conducting research that focuses on the semiotic resources which form multimodal ensembles and which function in the communicative space of modern English. Among the paradigms which are considered are the following: the systemic functional approach, social semiotics analysis, geo-semiotics, multimodal (inter) actional analysis, multimodal ethnography, multimodal corpus analysis, and multimodal reception analysis. A description of the distinctive features of the systemic functional approach to the study of English multimodal discourse has been formulated, and the history of this approach has been explored. An analysis has been carried out with regard to the feasibility and the relevance of applying it to the study of verbal and nonverbal oral and written (printed) semiotic resources, and its basic principles have been described. It is pointed out that semiotic resources can have four meanings or metafunctions: experiential, logical, interpersonal, and textual. Emphasis has been placed on the areas of multimodal linguistics which show significant promise, as well as on the basic approaches to the analysis of English multimodal discourse.

Key words:multimodality, multimodal linguistics, the systemic functional approach, semiotic resources, studies of multimodal discourse.

Computer Discourse Features in the Scope of Internet-linguistics

The article is an attempt to define the term “computer discourse” and its place in the concepts of Internet linguistics. Interest to studying computer discourse is explained the dynamic development and rapid spread of information technologies and their impact on various aspects of modern life. Because of an expansion of information space there is a need for identification of computer discourse functioning in the virtual environment and implementation of its comprehensive analysis. This article describes three main stages of communication development and proposes allocation of the new one – network (digital) stage. The paper analyzes Ukrainian and foreign scientists’ views towards studying computer communication. There the computer discourse features have been defined. It has been found that computer discourse is such a complicated notion because it partially combines features of other types and forms of communication. Also it has been found that computer discourse has some unique features, such as hypertextuality, virtuality, anonymity and distancivity. The research work on this paper revealed the need for further studying of computer discourse, including clarification of the computer communication impact on the human in the virtual space.

German-language Frame Modelling for the Concept of CHOOSING A PARTNER

This research paper is devoted to German-language frame structure modelling with respect to the concept of CHOOSING A PARTNER, using personal advertisements as source material. It is also devoted to a review of the main approaches to interpreting the complex multidimensional scientific concept of the “frame”, and various types of frames which exist. On the basis of the material that has been analyzed, we have developed our own approach to the interpretation of the frame, and have offered a relevant definition. The notion of choice is examined, and the concept of CHOOSING A PARTNER in German is modeled in the form of an actional frame which is then developed into object-centered frames. The means for realizing the valency of specified and of non-specified slots in the macro-propositional frame of the situation of choosing a partner are analyzed, where the detailed characteristics of men and women as well as their main motives and aims are represented, and prospects for further research in this area are indicated.

Key words:cognitive modelling, concept, frame, valency specified and valency non specified slot, partner choice.

Pragmatics of Inherent Expressivity in Poetic Text Translation (Case Study of Translations of Taras Shevchenko’s Poetry into Japanese)

The paper first analyzes the specificity of retransmitting of human emotions and assessments, arising from the national-cultural peculiarities of man’s relationship to reality, into the unrelated language. The problems of possibility / impossibility of preserving their expressive features and communicative potential have been considered. Particular attention has been paid to the accounting of similarities and dissimilarities in standards of emotions and assessments verbalizing in linguistic images of Ukrainian and Japanese languages. It is observed that in order to create emotional background interpreters use emotive devices related to the functional aspect of natural communication. In addition to this, along with the logic of understanding the emotional and evaluative referent relationship, the subconscious cognitive resources of the translator are explored ― the comprehension of “one’s” against the background of the “strange”. It was discovered that the overall strategy of translating inherently expressive speech elements consists of recreating aspects of their meaning through the optimum effect of counterparts in terms of the perlocutive effect.

Key words:pragmatic impact, inherent expressivity, assessment, emotionality, extra-linguistic factors, communicative significance.

Theoretical Justification of the Notions MINDSET and MENTALITY in the Terms of Lingvoculturology

The article is devoted to the review of the existing definitions of mindset and mentality in the domestic and foreign linguistics with the consideration of the lingvocultural parameters. Mindset is defined as a scientific category, a system of world views, tasks and their solutions. Mentality is viewed as the perception of the world via images that are marked by emotional and axiological orientations; as a special visualization of things that can be understood as a map of the world; as a part of a national spiritual culture that creates an ethnomental domain of a nation. Mentality is expressed in the feelings, views and wills of every member of a society on the basis of a common language and education. Mentality is represented in mental, behavioral and cultural stereotypes, historical traditions, people’s lifestyle and language. In its turn, a language, as one of the characteristic features of a nation, represents not only its culture but reflects its mentality. That is why the study of the particular ways of expression and verbalization of the national mentality is acute not only for linguistic studies but for the understanding of the cross-cultural relationships and foreseeing the hypothetical interethnic conflicts.

Key words:mindset, mentality, map of the world, national character, stereotype, lingvoculturology.

Distal Markers of Deception in the English Political Discourse

The article deals with the issue of deception in the linguistic aspect. The author focuses on the positive correlation between the use of language units with distal semantics, such as pronouns and deictic expressions, and the degree of probability of providing false information. Results of the study of the political interview with Barack Obama have shown that false statements contain an explicit choice of the speaker to speak about other people, and the implicit choice to use deictic expressions with distal meaning. In addition, liars tend to share the experience of others, and truth tellers tend to share their own experiences. The use of distancing strategy potentially indicates a high probability that the speaker is not telling the truth.

Key words:deception, distancing strategy, distal marker, political discourse.

Our research devoted to actual problems of linguoculturological and translating features of gluttony vocabulary of French language. Gluttony vocabulary is extremely rich and diverse, as is part of the national culture and language of each people. The French gastronomic discourse is represented by different parts of speech: nouns, adjectives, descriptive expressions, stylistic tropes like. Exploration results showed that the most used are the verbs to describe the processes of preparation and processing of food and adjectives for describing the food and culinary dishes. The study confirmed the rich stylistic possibilities of gluttony French vocabulary. During the analysis, we found that in modern French gastronomic discourse gluttony lexical units involved in the formation of bright, expressive stylistic means. Among them distinguishes, personification, metaphor, metonymy, wordplay and other. We were able to establish a number of major difficulties arise when translating texts of gluttony type. They are connected primarily with the names of the dishes, the names of the ingredients, units of measurement and trofonyms. Among the most effective ways to translate French gluttony vocabulary were: transcription, transliteration, tracing and using descriptive expressions.

Structural Features of Knowledge Representation in a Contemporary English Written Lecture

This article deals with the major structural features of knowledge representation in a contemporary English written lectures. Attention has been devoted to the definition of the term “lecture”, its main tasks and purposes has been outlined too. The basic pragmatic goal of the author-lecturer has been determined. The differences between oral and written representation of knowledge in lectures are determined and characterised. Depending on the form, several kinds of lectures are singled out. Basic paralingval signals that authors-lecturers often use in their oral forms of knowledge representation to their students are mentioned. The main structural components or compositional semantic units of a contemporary English written lecture are defined and analyzed. The functions peculiar to each of its parts, which in its turn ensure the integrity of the entire text are highlighted and analyzed. Taking into consideration all the basic features of the lecture, a clear model of educational lectures has been built inherent to both its types (oral and written). It has been determined and characterised a number of patterns typical to the written form of lecture discourse.

The Prototype of Shakespeare’s Dark Lady in the Folklore: Comparative Analysis of the Characters

This article deals with the similar probable historical and folkloric prototypes of the Dark Lady (William Shakespeare) because of similar heroines in folk ballads. Cultural and contextual aspects are given. Because of the limit of this article the research compares the selected translations of the sonnets XXVII and CXXX (translated by S. Marshak and D. Palamarchuk), which the lexemes denote epithets are marked. Also own translations of these poetic works are proposed. The characters of the Dark Lady and the heroine of the ballads are compared with the title character of the poem by Lesya Ukrayinka “Isolt of White Hands”. The analyzed selected English folk ballads from the collection of Francis James Child are translated into Ukrainian language. For context, there are given the facts of superstitions (mainly British) related to non-standard image, and the same motifs of folk tales. The reflection of Celtic motifs in the poem of Lesya Ukrainka and the analyzed ballads illustrates the ambivalence of the image of the swarthy (“brown”, “dark”, “dun”) and dark-haired heroine. There is a hypothetical unconscious interaction of Shakespeare’s sonnets feminine narratee and the character of the analyzed poem by Lesya Ukrayinka. The linguistic, poetological, comparative, historical and biographical, intermedial analysis are involved. The attention to the etymology of the English and Gaelic lexemes is paid.

Measuring speech influence: Experimental phonetics research methodology

The article offers an experimental phonetic research methodology to investigate the role of intonation in speech influence realization. This methodology is elaborated according to the proven techniques in contemporary phonetics and combines the use of subjective (perceptive and auditory), objective (acoustic) methods, methods of quantitative data analysis, method of semantic differential. The goal of the experiment is to prove the hypothesis about the role of rhythmic organization and prosodic components of the tutors’ intonation in video lectures in better supporting students’ attention, capturing the interest to the subject, facilitating understanding, which help in realization of speech influence in scholarly discourse, thus making the communication and learning more efficient, productive and successful. As a result of the experiment, the intonation pattern used in the video lecture should be established, and the indices of the temporal, dynamic and frequency characteristics most optimal for speech influence realization should be defined.  The paper gives brief insights into such notions as speech influence, scholarly discourse and an e-lecture as a genre of modern scholarly discourse.

Linguistic markers of viewpoint in press discourse

The article is an attempt to identify the linguistic markers of viewpoint in English-language press. The first section deals with the notion of viewpoint, the way it is defined and divided into categories, plus with its possible linguistic manifestations within each category. Attention is focused on the classification proposed by Paul Simpson (1993), who differentiates four main categories of viewpoint: spatial, temporal, psychological, and ideological. The linguistic indicators of viewpoint in language are analyzed on the basis of the works by Simpson (1993) and Short (1996). The subsequent analysis is based on press discourse, namely a selection of excerpts from British and the American newspapers (The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Observer, The Independent). In the analysis, numerous indicators of viewpoint are identified and explained with respect to their type and significance. The results of the research allow one to conclude that press discourse, although apparently objective and factual, is heavily perspectivised through viewpoint indicators.

Key words: cognitive linguistics, viewpoint, linguistic indicators, categories, press discourse.

French for Special Purposes FOS: Origin and Peculiarities of Approach

Due to the process of European integration in Ukraine the demand for highly qualified specialists, with a fairly high level of language skills is constantly increasing. This demand concerns not only foreign philology specialists, but also specialists in other fields of knowledge as humanities or techniques. The development of Ukraine’s cooperation with French-speaking countries in different cultural, educational, economic, social and political spheres is possible only in the presence of the French-speaking Ukrainian specialists. Teaching foreign languages has undergone various changes associated with the development of many methods and different approaches to the study of a foreign language. Nowadays, the traditional study of the French language, without taking into consideration peculiarities of learner specialty, fades into the background, giving way to the studying of a foreign language for learner’s needs and purposes. The article is an attempt to highlight the emergence of a special approach to the study of French – franзais sur objectifs spйcifiques, identify the main stages of its development, give their characteristics, describe the current state of this approach and perspectives of its development. Also, attention is focused on the main difficulties associated with teaching and learning of the French language within the FOS.

Key words:French for special purposes, stages of development, target audience, professional language, FOS teaching difficulties.

Ideographic Structure and Methodology of English Banking Terminology Analysis

The article deals with the problem of specialized terminology, the principles of its formation and development depending on its belonging to a particular kind of discourse. The ideographic structure is built by the example of English banking terminology (EBT). It is based on the meta-term “bank” and organizational structure of banks that includes four independent sectors: small business, individual business, private business (clients) and corporate business. The following elements have been placed to the structure of EBT: general financial terms, assets management terms, credit terms, investment terms, inter-banking activity terms, lease and banking trusts terms. To further study of nominative, functional and communicative peculiarities of terminology the research system consisted of five main stages have been developed. The first stage is preliminary study of terminology with the help of descriptive method. The second stage is singling out main term groups of discourse from the point of view of cognitive linguistics. The third stage is to figure out formation methods of terminological units of a particular discourse type (banking). The fourth stage is to build field structure of the conceptual body of discourse. The final stage is to carry out comparative analysis of genre types of discourse and terminology functioning in them.

Key words:banking terminology, meta-term, discourse, ideographic structure, field organization, conceptual body.

Semantics and Translation of Metaphoric Units in the Texts of American Press

The article is devoted to the research of the semantic peculiarities of the metaphorical lexical units in the English language. In the course of study the author systematized the scientific works on the research of a metaphor as a lexico-stylistic device. The peculiarities of using metaphors and their semantic meaning in the texts of American press have been characterized. The associative connections in the semantics of the metaphorical lexical units of the analyzed texts of American press have been determined. It has been established that due to the figurative features and expressive characterizes in the semantics of metaphors they represent the problem for translation. Reproducing them it is necessary to render the senses laid in the meaning of the original English metaphor in the Ukrainian text. In this paper the ways of translation of the metaphorical lexical units and specificity of their reproduction with keeping the meaningful figurativeness in the aspect of English-Ukrainian translation have been conducted. The metaphors in the texts of American press includes associative images taken from the different sciences and spheres of life, for example, policy, sport, economy, gastronomy, nature etc. In the study of semantic specificity of the analyzed metaphors, the author detected that some of them derived from historical events and mythology. The analysis shows that in the texts of American press the metaphors are translated by using of the Ukrainian equivalents, calquing, and concretization method. As a rule, the associative meanings in the text of American press have equivalent images in the Ukrainian culture, that’s why the equivalent way of translation turned out to be the most preferable in the sample of our paper.

Key words:metaphor, lexical unit, figurativeness, expressiveness, ways of translation, texts of American press.
